With Christmas just around the corner now, we had to name little Tallulah Downing as this week’s Moggy of the Week, mainly thanks to her mum Samantha sending in this cuter than cute photo of wee Tallulah “helping” (we’re thinking hindering really, lol!) her to wrap presents.
Tallulah was rescued from the RSPCA by Samantha last year and has really come out of her shell over the past 12 months.
Samantha told us: “Tallulah is a very nosey kitty – no matter what we are doing, she is always there…nose and thumbs first. This is me trying to wrap presents before Christmas…with trying being the key word – hee hee.”
As you can see from the picture Samantha sent in, Tallulah has extra toes that look like thumbs! This makes her a polydactyl kitty. Cats usually have 18 toes in total – five on each of their front paws and four on each of their back paws – but polydactyl cats can have as many as eight toes on each of their paws, front and/or back, and their first toe, or dewclaw as it is otherwise known, is often larger than the others – and resembles a thumb.
The Guinness World Records even has a polydactyl cat known as Jake from Ontario in Canada that has a whopping 28 toes. Jakes’ owners, Michelle and Paul Contant, entered him in 2002 and he has not been replaced as the “Most toes on a cat” winner since then.
